Diversity flourishes across India, and everything in it is different and unique. Whether it is the culture, food, language, architecture, clothing, etc., everything is diverse in other parts of the country. In the same way, worshipping the gods and goddesses is also quite different with different regional touches. Though the primary message conveyed is the same, the practice of conveying it has different flavors.
Navratri is one example of celebrating this diversity. The phrase Navratri resembles nine nights in Sanskrit. Nava means nine, where Ratri indicates nights. The festival is celebrated for nine nights in honor of the unfathomable power of goddess Durga in defeating the buffalo-headed demon, Mahishasura, on the tenth day. Thus, Navratri celebrates the feminine nature of the divine.
Through these nine nights, nine distinct forms of the goddess are being worshipped. It is like celebrating us by giving ourselves the space and time to cleanse and rejuvenate from within.
Shardiya Navratri or Navratri is celebrated with great zeal across Eastern and Northern India. This year 2021 Navratri starts on October 07th Thursday and will end on October 15th Friday with the Vijaya Dashami celebration.
This nine-night and ten-day festival bears immense spiritual, religious and also cultural importance. Let us peek more into the nine colors of Navratri and find how colors are related to essential oils.
Celebration Of Good Over Evil
According to the Mythology, the demon king Mahishasura approved immortality by the Lord Brahma, with only the condition of getting defeated by a woman. After Mahishasura attacked the three realms Hell, Heaven and Earth; Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma combined their energies to create Goddess Durga. After the long 15-day battle between Maa Durga and Mahishasura, Goddess Durga slew him with a Trishul.
The Hindu tradition believed that there are three forms of Goddess Durga namely, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati the active energies of Shiva and Vishnu and Brahma. These three forms further manifested into three forms each, thus originating the nine forms of the Goddess Durga called Nine Durgas. These nine Shakti forms of Maa Durga are beautifully worshipped throughout these Nine days.

Finally, Dussehra or Vijayadashmi is celebrated on the 10th day of the festivities. Altogether Dussehra signifies the victory of good over evil. These nine manifestations of the goddess Durga are worshiped with passion. Navratri is believed to push the divine spirit in us that can help us withstand obstacles with purity and freedom.
Colors Of Navratri And Their Significance
Navratri festivities are filled with vibrant colors. These colors are visible in the dresses people wear, decorations and designs around you. Have you ever wondered what these colors are and their significance? There is a meaning behind all the nine colors of Navratri. While the nine days of Navratri indicate the nine avatars of goddess Durga (the goddess of shakti or power) the nine colors of Navratri symbolize Devi's quality.
The Reason Behind The Colours Of Navratri
Everything in the universe is the vibration of energy and one among them is light. Light consists of different colors which is a form of energy. Color is vibration. Whether you are aware of it or not, these colors affect you physically, emotionally, physiologically, psychologically and spiritually. Every color has a specific effect on the human body and energy system as they vibrate at a particular rate. While the slower moving frequencies like yellow, orange and red tend to stimulate the body, the higher moving frequencies like blue, violet and turquoise tend to soothe and calm the body and emotions.
